INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS - The course is designed to teach all seventh grade students basic skills and terminology associated with the operation of the MacintoshѢ computer and peripherals in the Palma Computer Learning Center. Special emphasis will be placed on keyboarding, word processing, introduction to multimedia presentation using PowerPoint, publishing a web page, using email and internet navigation skills in order to facilitate students' utilization of the computer lab during their years at Palma. (5 credits).
KEYBOARDING AND INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS APPLICATIONS - The goal of the course is to develop in the student the skill of touch-typing with a minimum, consistent speed of 35-40 words per minute with 97% accuracy. Additionally, students shall learn basic skills and terminology associated with the operation of the Macintosh computer and peripherals. Students will also be instructed in the context of preparing basic business forms and letters and in the Palma guidelines for formatting a term paper. Students will also be instructed as to the basic operations of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and database software using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and FileMaker Pro. (10 credits).
JAVA PROGRAMMING HONORS - This course will work at extending the discipline of computer science. It is for those students who might be planning a computer science major in college or for those who might have a general interest in programming. The course covers control structures and data types with emphasis on structured data types and array processing. It then introduces the concepts of object-oriented programming paradigm, focusing on defining and using classes. Also covered are programming language principles, simple analysis of algorithms and basic searching and sorting techniques. Software engineering concepts are used to enhance, motivate, and nurture the problem solving approach that will be used throughout. Students will be strongly encouraged but not required to take the Computer Science AP exam in May.. Prerequisite: Have taken or currently enrolled in Algebra II/Trig and permission of the instructor. (10 credits).
MECHANICAL DRAWING USING AUTOCAD - Introduction to the fundamental operating principles used in applying the computer as a tool in drafting and design. Provides basic skills needed in using the computer to create, edit, revise and store drawing and design information. This course is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive explanation of the use of CAD software in drafting applications. Students will learn the fundamentals of drafting using a CAD software program as the instructional medium. (10 credits).
ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING USING AUTOCAD - Introduction to the fundamental operating principles used in applying the computer as a tool in drafting and design. Provides basic skills needed in using the computer to create, edit, revise and store drawing and design information. This course provides an introduction to the diverse and complex field of architecture in a comprehensive, organized manner. Topics covered are residential design and construction; electrical and mechanical systems; architectural design for energy conservation; finance presentation; and commercial design and construction. (10 credits).
