PALMA'S REQUIRED SUMMER READING LIST

As a college-preparatory school, Palma is dedicated to graduating students who are ready for the extreme amount of reading that must be done to succeed in college. Students entering the following grades in the fall of 2006 are required to read the books listed under their grade level. They will be tested during the first week of school next fall, and that score will count for up to 25% of their first quarter grade. It is strongly recommended that as the boys read, they keep a reader's journal so that they can review before the test. For many it is almost impossible to remember the important details of the books if they have not kept a diary of the material while they are reading. Students should be prepared to take a test that could include several types of questions, including true/false, matching, multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions.

A word of caution: students will be tested on the material in the books. Videos and Cliffs Notes are not viable substitutes. Students must be able to remember the details of the books. It is virtually impossible for some students to do so without intensive study. Reading the books early in the summer or trying to cram them all in during the week before school will not yield good results. A better strategy is to read the books at a measured pace, taking notes and underlining important passages along the way. Discussing the books with others who are reading them is also helpful. Make sure to know the names of all the main characters and locations, as well as what happens throughout the story. Again, keep a journal and take notes. The effort will pay off on the test.

Students should be sure they can answer the following questions about each novel:

  1. Who are the main characters?
  2. What are the conflicts or struggles in the story?
  3. What do the main characters each contribute to the conflicts?
  4. What comment about human nature (theme) is being made in the story?
  5. What is the resolution of the conflicts? How does the resolution reveal the theme?
