STUDIO ART - Students in this course explore the fundamentals of pictorial design and composition, and how art is used as a means of personal expression. Using various mediums, students learn textures, rendering forms, shading, one and two-point perspective, and portraiture. Painting principles are introduced; students develop a color wheel, color scales, and compositions that illustrate atmospheric perspective and the effects of complementary colors and color chords. In addition to drawing and painting, students create images using the linocut printmaking process. Important artists from the past and present are introduced as examples of excellence, and students are encouraged, through specific assignments, to develop their own artistic vocabulary to facilitate an effective visual communication. This course fulfills part of the California State University requirement. Prerequisite: None (10 credits).

DRAMA - This course is an activity class that challenges the student to use his voice and body and interpretive skills to make a character come to life for an audience. The history of theatre is taught through lecture and several strengthening exercises and introduced and performed. Activities include loosening up exercises, pantomime, improvisation, reader's theater, characterization, one-act plays, and an advanced project, such as complete plays. A three-act play will be performed. This course fulfills part of the California State University requirement. Prerequisite: None (10 credits).

DISCOVERING ART HISTORY - Students in this course are introduced to the traditions of architecture, sculpture and painting through the ages. Focusing on different world cultures, particularly those of the West, the course follows a chronological path that features the major monuments and works of art in our artistic heritage. Through text, film, slides and PowerPoint presentations, students recognize important works of art, their salient characteristics, and analyze the meanings for the creators as well as for contemporary viewers. Students will develop a broader worldview, comparing and contrasting the artistic achievement of different places and eras. The textbook, Art History for Young People, is required. This course fulfills part of the California State University requirement. Prerequitite: None (10 credits).

FILM STUDIES - Students in this course study film as both an art and a means of communication. They are taught to "read" a film, analyzing its narrative structure, genre conventions, subtext, technical and artistic factors, and purpose. The emphasis is on the various techniques used by filmmakers to convey meaning. The course also introduces traditions of film making, as well as the history of the cinema. In addition, students examine how films often reflect the times and conditions in which they are made, and conversely, how motion pictures sometimes help shape attitudes and values in society. Along with film analyses, requiring short writing assignments, the students will create short film-related projects. This course fulfills part of the University of California State requirement. Prerequisite: None (10 credits).

ADVANCED ART AND DESIGN - This course is designed for the advanced art student who has become proficient in the use of several media and needs a more challenging studio environment in which to grow creatively. Students at this level are expected to develop specific areas such as painting, sculpture, or graphic design. For instance, a student wishing to pursue graphic design in college would take the course to enlarge his personal portfolio before college or art school review. The instructor will work closely with the individual student to establish an overall view of the arts. (Portfolio review and approval by the instructor are necessary before enrollment in this course.) This course fulfills the California State University requirement. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor (10 credits).

SYMPHONIC BAND - This is a music performance class with three aspects; to improve the students' musical proficiency; to introduce the students to the fundamentals of music; and to form an ensemble that will be exposed to a variety of band literature. The band will not only perform home concerts, but also perform at school rallies, athletic events, community functions and concert festivals. Each year the band will make a trip to perform outside our immediate region. As per the grading policy, members are required to attend all performances. This ensemble is considered the "core" of the Palma High School Band program. This course fulfills part of the California State University fine arts requirement. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor (10 Credits).

JAZZ ENSEMBLE - This is a music performance class with several goals; introduction of basic jazz techniques, including improvisation, and performance of standard Jazz / Big Band repertoire. The ensemble will consist of standard Big Band instrumentation: alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitar, bass, piano and drums. The ensemble will not only perform home concerts, but also perform at school rallies, athletic events, community functions and concert festivals. Each year the band will make a trip to perform outside our immediate region. As per the grading policy, members are required to attend all performances. Members of this ensemble must concurrently be enrolled in Symphonic Band (piano, guitar, and bass players maybe exempted at the discretion of the director). This course fulfills part of the California State University fine arts requirement. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor (10 Credits).

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL BAND - This is a music course designed to introduce students to the basics of performing on a wind instrument. Students of any ability are welcome to join and make music a part of their lives. All basic techniques and fundamentals of each student's instrument will be covered in a effort to provide a solid musical foundation for later participation in the Symphonic Band, Jazz ensemble and also for a lifetime of musical involvement and understanding. As per the grading policy, members are required to attend all performances. This ensemble is open to any member of the student body wishing to play a wind instrument. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor (10 Credits).

GUITAR - This year course is designed for high school students of any ability who want to learn to play the guitar. Students will learn both the instrumental side of guitar playing (melodies, solos, ensembles) and the accompanying side (chords, singing, and playing). Right-hand techniques will include playing with a flat pick (used in rock, country, bluegrass, popular, folk, blues) and finger-style (used in classical, folk, jazz, blues, popular, Latin-American, etc.). Left-hand techniques will begin with easy open-position (power) chords and melodies in first position; as students progress they will learn to play movable (bar) chords, solos, and play in positions up the neck. Improvisation and introductory song-writing techniques will also be discussed. This course fulfills part of the California State University fine arts requirement. Prerequisite: None (10 Credits).

MUSIC APPRECIATION - Music is art as well as science. To be able to understand it to the fullest, we must be able to appreciate both its emotional and intellectual content. The goal of this course is to provide the student tools for a basic understanding of music and the necessary background to understand what is going on technically when you listen to music. Prerequisite: None (10 Credits).

DIGITAL ART AND DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION - This hands-on lab course will introduce the students to the use of the computer for creating and presenting graphic images electronically. Students will learn how to use various digital photo, audio and video editors to help them with their own projects. Students will also learn to exchange files between the programs, create brochures, advertisements, other forms of page layout, use a video camera, import and export video from computer to outside source, add audio tracks to video projects, and create movies in various file formats. This course fulfills part of the California State University requirement. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor (10 credits).

MULTIMEDIA AUTHORING - Multimedia is the integration of text, graphics, animation, full motion video, and sound in an interactive context. This hands-on lab course introduces the student to the computer programs PhotoShop, Premiere and Director. Students create animations, integrate digital video into a Director Movie and implement interactively via behaviors in preparing multimedia presentations for use in the educational and informational settings. The scripting language for Director called Lingo will also be introduced. This course fulfills part of the California State University requirement. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor (10 credits).
