CHINESE 1: The students learn contemporary Mandarin Chinese. The course is based on modern principles of second-language acquisition, which integrates the learning of all four language skills. Grammar is treated as a tool for developing the ability to communicate in Chinese. The students learn PINYIN system of pronunciation; radicals of characters; writing characters, phrases, and sentences; reading with PINYIN; engaging in practical conversations; typing characters by computer. The course also provides students with a basic understanding of Chinese culture and tradition.

CHINESE 2: Chinese 2 builds upon and extends the foundations developed in Chinese 1. Chinese 2 continues students’ development of four language skills: 1) listening to and oral translation of sentences; 2) engaging in practical conversations; 3) reading and comprehending with the PINYIN system; and writing extended sentences and a short composition based on over 300 characters and phrases. 4) Typing sentences in Chinese by computer. The course also provides students with a basic understanding of Chinese culture and tradition.

CHINESE 2H: Chinese 2H builds upon and extends the foundations developed in Chinese 1. Chinese 2H continues students’ development of four language skills: 1) listening to and oral translation of sentences and lesson text; 2) engaging in practical conversations; 3) reading and comprehending with the PINYIN system; and writing extended sentence and an essay with at least 10 extended sentences based on over 300 characters and phrases. Writing the translation of lesson text from Chinese to English. 4) Translating the sentences from English to Chinese by grammar. 5) Typing sentences in Chinese by computer. The course also provides students with a basic understanding of Chinese culture and tradition.

CHINESE 3: Chinese 3 builds upon and extends the foundations developed in Chinese 2 or Chinese 2H. Chinese 3 continues students’ development of four language skills: 1) listening to and oral translation of sentences or short massages 2) engaging in practical conversations; 3) reading and comprehending with the PINYIN system and start to read without the PINYIN system. 4) writing extended sentences and a short composition based on characters and phrases. 5) typing a short composition in Chinese by computer. The course also provides students with a basic understanding of more Chinese culture and tradition.

CHINESE 3H: Chinese 3H builds upon and extends the foundations developed in Chinese 2 or Chinese 2H. Chinese 3H continues students’ development of four language skills: 1) listening to and oral translation of sentences or short massages 2) engaging in practical conversations; 3) reading and comprehending with the PINYIN system and start to read without the PINYIN system. 4) using dictionary 5) writing extended sentences and an essay with at least 50 interesting sentences based on the courses 350 characters and phrases.. 6) typing a short composition in Chinese by computer. The course also provides students with an enriched understanding of Chinese culture and tradition.

JAPANESE I &endash; Japanese I is a beginning course in building proficiency in the Japanese language. The course focuses on all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Grammar is treated as a tool for developing the ability to communicate in Japanese. The students will learn about Japanese culture, tradition, people and the society. Prerequisite: None (10 credits)
JAPANESE II - This course is a continuation of the Japanese II course. Students will continue to develop the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in Japanese and deepen their understanding of Japanese society and culture. 50 or more Kanji will be introduced. Prerequisite: Japanese I, with a minimum "C" grade highly recommended. Solid Hiragana and Katakana knowledge.
JAPANESE II HONORS - This course is a continuation of the Japanese II course. Students will continue to develop the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in Japanese and deepen their understanding of Japanese society and culture. 50 or more Kanji will be introduced. In this honors class, students will be expected to maintain a grade of A or B and fulfill additional requirements such as maintaining a journal or portfolio, completing Internet activities, and completing extra speaking and writing assignments. A prerequisite for entry into Japanese II Honors is successful completion of Japanese I with a minimum grade of "B" and recommendation of the Japanese I teacher. Solid Hiragana and Katakana knowledge is also required.

RUSSIAN I - Russian I is an introductory course in the four communications skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), of the Russian language. Prerequisite: none. (10 credits)
RUSSIAN II -Russian II is continuation of Russian I. Listening, speaking, reading and writing will be pursued in a greater degree. Prerequisite: A passing grade of "C" or better in Russian I is highly recommended.

LATIN I - Latin I is an introduction to the Latin language and the culture of Roman civilization. As students learn to read and comprehend Latin, they will become better aware of the development of English vocabulary, grammar and syntax. Prerequisite: None (10 credits).
LATIN II - This course is a continuation of the Latin I course in that it continues to present both the language and culture of the Roman civilization. It is intended to teach students to read and comprehend gradually more difficult Latin passages. Prerequisite: Latin I, with a minimum "C" grade highly recommended (10 credits).

Prerequisite: A minimum "A" grade in Latin I and recommendation of the Latin I teacher (10 credits).
LATIN III HONORS- After a brief review of Latin vocabulary and grammar covered in Latin II, students will read selections from Jason and the Argonauts as well as a portion of Caesar's De Bello Gallico. Students will learn about the Roman military of the 1st century B.C. and the historic events of its Gallic conquest. Additionally, students will read in depth about Caesar himself and his maverick style of leadership. Prerequisite: A minimum "C" in Latin II, with recommendation of the Latin II teacher (10 credits).
LATIN IV ADVANCED PLACEMENT - The focus of this course is Rome's greatest epic poem, Vergil's Aeneid. The AP Vergil Exam at the end of the year is a requirement of the course. Students will read Vergil's Latin as Latin to appreciate the work as poetry and will focus on literary devices, themes in the literature, the mythology of the Trojan War and the character of Aeneas in their daily translations. Prerequisite: A minimum "B" in Latin III H and the recommendation of the Latin III teacher (10 credits).
SPANISH I - Spanish 1 is a beginning course in building proficiency in the Spanish language. The focus is on communication with accuracy. Students will become acquainted with the culture of the Hispanic world. Prerequisite: None (10 credits).
SPANISH II - Spanish II is a review of grammatical structures, vocabulary, and cultural items covered in Spanish I. Students will continue to prepare themselves to communicate everyday ideas in Spanish. Prerequisite: Spanish I, with a minimum "C" grade highly recommended (10 credits).

SPANISH III - Spanish III is a review of grammatical structures, vocabulary, and cultural items covered in Spanish I and II courses. Students produce more advanced conversation and writing assignments. Students read more advanced literary selections and become even more knowledgeable about Hispanic culture. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish II with a minimum grade of "C" and recommendation of the Spanish II teacher (10 credits).
SPANISH III HONORS - Spanish III is a review of grammatical structures and vocabulary covered in Spanish I and II courses. Conversational practice is emphasized and more advanced writing assignments are made. More advanced literary selections will be read and students will become even more knowledgeable about Hispanic culture. A prerequisite for entry into Spanish III is successful completion of Spanish II with a minimum grade of "B" and recommendation of the Spanish II teacher. Higher expectations and additional assignments will be expected of Spanish III students. Prerequisite: Spanish II, with a minimum "B" grade and recommendation of the Spanish II teacher (10 credits).
SPANISH IV HONORS - Spanish IV is a continuation of the more challenging goals and objectives found in Spanish III. Spanish IV typically has a number of native speakers, which both challenges non-native speakers and enhances their classroom experience. This class is conducted entirely in Spanish and requires the students to participate actively. Prerequisite: Minimum"C"average in Spanish III; recommendation of the Spanish III teacher (10 credits)
SPANISH V ADVANCED PLACEMENT - This class is conducted entirely in Spanish and requires students to participate actively. Students have reached a reasonable proficiency in reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. The purpose of the course is to prepare the students for the AP Language Examination by listening activities, reading specific literary works by Guillen, Machado, Borges, and Marquez to develop vocabulary and writing skills beyond a plot, summary, comparing and contrasting themes, writing using written sources, and speaking skills leading a formal presentation. Prerequisite: Spanish IV, with an “A” or “B” grade and permission of the instructor. (10 credits).
ITALIAN 1 - The students will basic Italian. This will include basic concepts of grammar and conversation. The course is based on modern language techniques. Students will also be introduced to Italian culture to include: history, art, music, and literature. Units will include Roman History and the Catholicism.
ITALIAN II - Italian II is a continuation of the study of the Italian language, Italian speaking people, their culture and its influence on both the p[ast and present.. This course will build on the basic concepts of grammar and conversation. Students will study new grammatical topics, such as how to conjugate verbs in the present, past, and future tenses, as well as speaking, writing and reading at more advanced levels. Guest speakers will also be utilized.
ITALIAN II HONORS - Italian II Honors is a continuation and development of Italian language, its culture and its influence on both the past and present. In this course the student will continue to improve communication in the target language. Written reports and an oral presentation will be required. It will also so be required to watch the dauly Italian T.V. news and write a brief summary. Students will also continue to study grammatical topics, writing, as well as reading and speaking at more advanced levels. Guest speakers will also be utilized.
