The scripture project consists of four parts: 1) Class presentation, 2) Research paper, 3) art work, and 4) literary work.
The student will research his passage using the internet and bible commentaries. He can also use additional books. He will spend some time thinking about the symbols and deeper meaning of the passage, as well as the context in which it was written.
Each day we read a part ofLuke's gospel. As we read through, the student's passage will come up. On that day the presentation and materials will come due.
The presentation will take 3 to 6 minutes. The student can use flash cards but not read a report. He will present what he learned about the passage through his research and reflection. For instance, he may want to talk about the key symbols and their meaning, the key spiritual messages in the passage, and provide a context for the stories in the gospel or among the gospels or in history. He is basically sharing some of the insights he learned when doing research so he can teach and engage his fellow students. If he can relate the insights to life today, that is a plus.
The paper will be typed and double spaced. There will be a cover page with the citation of the passage, the student''s name, the teacher's name, the class name, the period, and the date. The body of the paper will be approximately two pages. It should be written in proper English with indented paragraphs, correct grammar and punctuation. There will be a sources page to show which books and pages he used for research. Certain sources will be required such as the New Jerome Biblical Commentary.
The art work will be shown to the students. The student's name must be on it if at all possible. The paper can also have a note or attachment briefly describing the art. Examples of art are clay, watercolor, colored pencil, banner, stained glass-like drawings, carvings, and paper mache. The art must tie to an idea or part of a story in the student's passage.
The literary work is a way to creatively use words to relate to an idea or part of the passage. It could be a haiku or other form of poem, a song, a video, or story.
